A while ago I clicked on an anonymized link from a long-term poster on BC which led to a page displaying some text file he'd uploaded. This poster is someone reputedly known to the powers that be as a BL under his real name. I have the impression his document was on a social site or some upload clearing house such as Scribd or the like. I always use Anonymouse for BC-related browsing, so my connection automatically went through that. Therefore I was HORRIFIED to see displayed on the page I was visiting my Facebook profile with my IRL information given as a visitor to that page! I immediately closed my browser, but of course the cat was already out of the bag. If Anonymouse hides one's IP address, how is it that the site I visited was able to perceive my Facebook identity? Is it done through my browser somehow? I am infuriated with the perfidious Facebook and have closed my account with them, but suspect them of being capable of still giving my information away by some backdoor means, very likely without my knowledge. If there are any simple steps I can take to protect myself from any further such farragos I'd sure be happy to learn about them. Upon reflection, I probably shouldn't have closed the Facebook account: that no doubt is a giveaway unto itself; but it's surely too late to change that now. |
