Some of you will know that I've been visited by the men in blue a couple of times during the past year. Oh, nothing particularly nasty, just a few questions about our purpose here on the Tech Forum and the Lounge. Since we've been very careful to make sure that all posts are legal, nothing is hidden, etc. we're co-existing in a condition of mutual cautiousness. However, I'm concerned to see that their concept of the purpose of the Tech Forum is that we exist to show people how to conceal information without getting caught. That's not why I set up the forum in the first place, though it's evident that some such questions will be asked. In other words, the Tech Forum was never intended to be a Guard your Security Forum, at least not insofar as encryption is concerned. Sure, guard against viruses and keyloggers and other invasive technologies, but reading posts recently indicates that most concern encryption, live CDs, etc. Now don't get me wrong: I don't have any intention of forbidding such discussions, even though I feel that, for the most part, they aren't very productive, I just want to make it clear that the Tech Forum is a GENERAL technical forum, designed for all sorts of computer (and even non-computer) related questions. Quite frankly, I'm not overly comfortable about being told that I'm running some sort of forum designed to cover up lawbreaking; that was never, and will never, be the case. I'm getting old and I'm not very well, and I don't forsee the rest of my life being spent in any fight except one of physical survival against disease. If the Tech Forum seems to be heading in a direction that will invite yet more confrontation then I'll have to consider asking someone else to take over. This is not a threat, it's just a matter of my peace of mind. Somersault ![]() |
