Your best bet is to always use an updated antivirus and firewall. Most PDF vulnerabilities affect all readers, I dont use Acrobat Reader because I find it bloated with unnecessary features and slows down my computer.

I use FoxIt PDF:

And that is a full 7MB download as opposed to Adobe Acrobat reader 200MB (aprox)
