What's this thing do?

One from the overseas news desk which caught my eye. Those Indonesians still aren't 100% sure about 'what makes a man a man' but they're slowly catching on.

Boy Listed As Girl Is Really a Boy, Doctor, Census Takers Say.

"Central Java. A 15-year-old who struggled to be recognized as a boy for years can officially do so now, having undergone intensive examinations at Dr. Karyadi Hospital in Semarang.

"The hospital concluded on Thursday that Maemunah, who is listed as a girl in his birth certificate, has the requisite sexual organs to prove he is indeed a boy, and there no longer needs to be any confusion over the matter. [...]

" 'He definitely has a penis and we are also checking his testicular function. We will check the levels of the hormone testosterone to explore whether Mei's sperm can fertilize ova or not,' [Dr] Ardy said. [...]"

How intensive would these examinations have to be? Surely Mei could just dangle the requisite organs out. How confusing is that? I bet the medical profession is also confused about the best way to explore his testosterone levels. Perhaps I should offer my expertise.

On a more serious note ...

"Ardy said Maemunah's penis was deformed and he needed surgery, which would be difficult because of his age.

" 'I wish the case had been identified at an earlier stage so the child could be operated on at the age of 1 or 2,' Ardy said. [...]

"Dr. Paulus A Gozalli of Margono Soekardjo Hospital in Banyumas said Maemunah could not be categorized as a hermaphrodite."

In a more developed part of the world, Maemunah would have been saved a lot of emotional stress by having received medical treatment before he was even aware that his manhood was in doubt.

It's stories like this which remind me that I should be grateful for being born physically whole and healthy. At times, it's too easy to get caught up in my own problems. I need to remember that my life could have been a lot worse.

Hopefully, Mei will be able to have his corrective surgery, and will be able to father happy, healthy sons of his own.
