The ordeal of surgery is less than the ordeal of dying of cancer.

I'd say the only way you "lose" by having the operation is if you die instantly (or at least painlessly) from a car wreck or something else before the more uncomfortable parts of death-by-cancer would have set in.

Here's hoping that won't happen.
