I don't understand. You have Trillian installed, Trillian supports Yahoo, why not just add his account to your Trillian/Yahoo contact list?

Seems pretty easy to me. Same with MSN. It's usually more secure to use only Trillian; it doesn't install adware, spyware, or any of the other nasties you mention, and you only have to run one client to have all your chat stuff working simultaneously. You don't get ads, either.
