It's perfectly ok to say "I don't want to take sides." MOST people will respect this.

Barring that, it's probably better to go with the side that has the higher moral ground if one has an obviously much-higher moral standing (using your own judgement of morality of course). If both sides are close in that department, consider going with your conscience.
