Time to repeat the instructions for NOT losing your ICQ contact list.

One choice: use ICQ2001 which saves the contact list on their server.

Other choice: for users of ICQ2000a or 2000b:

  1. Find the ICQ directory in program files. You'll find a subdirectory called 2000a or 2000b. Copy that entire directory to a safe place.

  2. Using regedit, go to HKEY CURRENT USER, Software, Mirabilis, ICQ, Owners. Select the OWNERS entry in the left pane.

  3. Still in regedit, from the Registry menu select Export Registry File. Make sure the box marked Selected Branch is checked, choose a filename, and save it in a safe place.
In both cases a safe place would be a floppy (if it's large enough), or a CD-RW. If the floppy's not large enough for the 2000a or 2000b directory, run the ICQ Database Converter and get rid of your history, then go ahead with the steps above.

On the new computer:

  1. Install ICQ. You can abort the sign up process.

  2. Copy the 2000a or 2000b directory contents into the new one that the installation created for you.

  3. Copy the .reg file from the floppy onto your desktop. Double click it.
Once you've done this, ICQ will have all your old identities and contact lists back in place.
