I've enjoyed reading your post and will look forward to subsequent parts. I see why some of what I've written about my Scrappy has reminded you of this boy. Of my four major young friends, I've been warned by others to have nothing to do with three of them because they are "scum" and "nothing but trouble" and in one case the warning was from the boy's own relatives. Underneath all their toughness is still a little boy who needs to be loved and who is sweet and caring.
